Vanessa Anderson

Apprenticeship Programme Manager,
Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH)

Vanessa is the Apprenticeships Programmes and Levy Manager at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a post I have held for the past 2 years.  I have over 20 years of experience in the Further Education sector and apprenticeship programmes development.  I have a keen desire to equip the workforce of the future with the skills and knowledge required to be outstanding professionals. I am committed to promoting social mobility and believe that the full utilisation of the apprenticeship levy will help to create a stronger, fairer society in which people from all backgrounds can realise their potential. Working with both clinical and non-clinical staff to develop the different apprenticeship pathways at Cambridge University Hospitals has been the most rewarding element of my role and I look forward to continuing to develop new routes into the NHS via apprenticeships opportunities.

  • Exploring the CUH Nursing Apprenticeship Pathway, one of the first pathways to provide the option of a 4-year apprenticeship scheme allowing students to earn while they learn before becoming a registered nurse
  • Outlining how the model is made possible by utilising the apprenticeship levy and creating close collaborations with educational institutions
  • Highlighting the key benefits of the pathway including its status for social mobility in attracting applicants from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds due to the ‘earn while you learn’ aspect of the pathway
  • Providing guidance for hospitals and colleges who are developing nursing apprenticeship pathways including the need to invest heavily in personal support such as mentors, pastoral and student support
